Plot
The Expendables leader Barney Ross (Stallone) and his team rescue former member Doctor Death (Snipes), a knife expert who was imprisoned in a train. They then infiltrate a military base in Somalia to stop a weapons deal involving another former member and co-founder of the Expendables, Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who became a ruthless arms dealer. However, Stonebanks recognizes Ross and shoots him in the shoulder, escaping in a helicopter. Ross is saved by his team and taken to a hospital.
Ross decides to retire his old team and recruit a new one with the help of his friend Bonaparte (Grammer), a retired mercenary. He hires four young and skilled fighters: computer expert Thorn (Powell), martial artist Luna (Rousey), former Navy SEAL Smilee (Lutz) and sharpshooter Mars (Ortiz). Meanwhile, Stonebanks is tracked down by CIA operative Max Drummer (Ford) and his partner Trench Mauser (Schwarzenegger), who offer Ross a mission to capture Stonebanks alive in exchange for amnesty for his team.
Ross and his new team locate Stonebanks in Bucharest, Romania, where he is attending an art auction. They ambush him at his hotel and engage in a firefight with his men. However, Stonebanks manages to trap Ross's team in a building rigged with explosives and escapes again. Ross contacts Drummer for help and is reunited with his old team, who survived the explosion. They rescue the new team and escape from the building before it blows up.
Stonebanks tracks down Ross's plane and shoots it down with a missile launcher. He then captures Ross's team and tortures them in his base in Azmenistan. He taunts Ross with a video call and challenges him to come after him. Ross agrees and infiltrates Stonebanks's base with the help of Galgo (Banderas), an eccentric mercenary who joined the team earlier. They free the hostages and fight their way out of the base. Ross confronts Stonebanks in a fistfight and stabs him in the chest with Doctor Death's knife. He then shoots him several times with his revolver.
Ross and his team are airlifted by Drummer and Trench. They celebrate their victory at a bar, where they are joined by Yin Yang (Li), another former member who was absent during the mission. Ross decides to keep both his old and new teams as the Expendables.

The Expendables 3 received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 32% based on 172 reviews, with an average rating of 4.6/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Like its predecessors, The Expendables 3 offers a modicum of all-star thrills for old-school action fans but given all the talent assembled, it should have been a lot more fun." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 35 out of 100 based on 36 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale, the same as the previous two films.
Many critics criticized the film for its excessive use of CGI, lack of violence and humor compared to the previous films, and its PG-13 rating. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote, "The Expendables 3 is a tiresome parade of ageing action heroes going through the motions with no evident enjoyment or conviction." Scott Foundas of Variety called it "a drawn-out, uninspired slog that ranks as the least satisfying entry in the series to date." James Berardinelli of ReelViews said, "The Expendables 3 is so mind-numbingly dull and lacking in creativity that it's hard to believe anyone thought this was worth releasing to theaters."
However, some critics praised the action sequences, the cast and the direction. Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three out of four stars, saying, "The Expendables 3 is a sometimes bloody, often funny and exciting ode to a bygone era of action movies." Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post wrote, "The Expendables 3 is a lot of fun. It's also ridiculous. But it's not stupid." Drew McWeeny of HitFix said, "The Expendables 3 is easily the best film in the franchise so far. It's got a great sense of humor about itself and its genre."
Trivia
The film was leaked online three weeks before its official release, resulting in millions of illegal downloads and a significant loss of revenue for the producers.
The film features several actors who have played iconic roles in action and sci-fi films, such as Rambo (Stallone), Terminator (Schwarzenegger), Blade (Snipes), Mad Max (Gibson), Indiana Jones (Ford), Zorro (Banderas) and Han Solo (Ford).
The film marks the first time that Stallone and Gibson share screen time together. They were both considered for the role of Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon (1987), which eventually went to Gibson.
The film is dedicated to the memory of stuntman Kun Liu, who was killed during an explosion scene in Bulgaria in 2012.
The film features a cameo appearance by Bruce Willis as Mr. Church, who was a main character in the first two films. He was originally supposed to reprise his role, but he dropped out due to a salary dispute with Stallone.
